Download Speed Test

We all wonder about 'how fast is my internet connection'. We are paying a 'provider', an ISP, perhaps monthly, and somewhere in the documentation they suggested a connection speed. But whatever your contracted speed is, it is 'fun' to check that speed, if possible. There are many factors involved in a download, and only some of them can be factored into any test, and calculation.

Download Speed Test

This speed test is similar to that for users of Optus Broadband, which is mentioned in the ExeTel members documentation. Please note, the test can yield inaccurate results, due to many factors, and assumptions ... it is 'just for FUN' ...

That said, to run the test click the button below ... if it appears ... the test needs javascript ...

No guarantee is given, or implied by this test! It consists of some simple javascript. The script gets the date/time, and starts a download of a 800 KB jpeg file. When the download completes, the date/time is checked again, and a rough calculation is done. So take great care where, and how you use this information ... ;-)).

In Australia, broadband commences at 256 KB (K = thousands of bytes) per second. That is a considerable jump from dial-up, which stopped at 56 KB. In Europe, broadband starts at 512 KB, because they had a considerable ISDN installed base at 128/256 KB. Living near Paris, I have a 4 GB connections, but seldom see more than about 1.5 GB/sec from this test.

Have FUN!
